Many people misunderstand the idea of financial freedom. They see it as meaning financial independence, which they interpret as building up enough assets or income stream to work when they want, vacation where they want, and buy what they want.

However, the Bible generally addresses a healthy perspective on money in terms of contentment (1 Timothy 6:6-8; Hebrews 13:5). Contentment is learning to see money as God sees it, and nothing more. Money is a vehicle for providing for our needs and those of others, and for funding the advancement of His Kingdom.

Contentment also results from learning to see God for who He is. Only when we realize that the Creator of the universe loves us and has our best interests at heart can we be content. Only when we realize He is sovereign and providentially in control of our earthly lot – our vocation and income – can we truly be content.

Contentment is a spiritual issue, not an amount-of-money issue. God is always there and never changes. He is consistent and stable. Our security lies not in what we have here on earth, but Who we will be with after we leave this earth. Having that eternal perspective helps us deal with the earthly ups and downs, stock market highs and lows, and acquiring and losing stuff.

That’s freedom.
